AI Lectures From Tokyo

You are possibly using an outdated browser (probably Netscape 3 or 4). This site makes heavy use of modern standards that are not supported by this generation of browsers. You are therefore not experiencing the site in its full capacity. We urge you to consider upgrading to Mozilla or another standards-compliant browser. We strongly discourage the use of Internet Explorer due to security reasons. If you are using a text-based browser, then ignore this. I would be very interested to hear your impressions.

The AILectures from Tokyo: Technical Set Up

Although the technologies used in the AILectures from Tokyo are not new, they have never been used in the present combination connecting both entire lecture halls and individuals on the internet in highly interactive setting. In this sense, the AILectures from Tokyo are a technological experiment.

The technical set up of the AILectures from Tokyo consists of four different communication pathways:

VC Fig 1: video conference and application sharing

play Fig 2: streaming

The sites are joined in a video conference (VC). Each site can see and hear, what's going on at the other sites (see Fig 1). During the lectures, the VC is used to transmit real-time video and audio of the speaker and, alternatively, demo movies (H.323, 768 kBit/s). The VC central (MCU) is located at switch.

The slides are transmitted by application sharing (AS) using the BridgIt software (see also Fig 1).

Instant messaging (IM) provides background communication network among the technical staff at the different sites. It is used to discuss technical issues without interfering with the ongoing lectures.

Also individuals on the internet can join the AILectures by live streaming (LS) technology (see Fig 2). The stream (200 kBit/s) is generated by the play software.
